An Open Question to Slam Poets: (2013)

Guys, seriously, I love you, I love it when I get to get on stage with you, but why do so many slam poets slip into that same sing-song metered cadence bull-shit for everything? Language can be brisk, clipped, and halt. ing. Language can be irregular, and cacophonous to the ear. Sure, language can be sinuous and melodious too, but it isn’t always. I mean, shit, you’ve got the entirety of spoken communication, not to mention the arm gestures and body postures wrapped up in any performance, whether the performer knows it or not. Why would you limit yourself and your expression?
Poetry doesn’t have to be beautiful.
It doesn’t have to sound beautiful.
You can walk up to a mic and whisper “fuck…”
And if that’s what speaks to your audience,
They will applaud.
There is no magic to slam,
No right way,
No wrong.
Just people sayin’ shit.
That’s it.
You know something I don’t?
