Wife and I are standing in the supermarket,
cold-case stripped mostly bare,
white large eggs $9 for a dozen
brown large organic $4 for a dozen

and I just…
And to be clear, brown eggs are better anyhow
more flavor, better for baking–
and to say I’m worried would be an understatement
the current culture (worried for myself)
the hard pendulum swing (worried for my friends)
knew it was coming, know this ain’t that different really
knowing and feeling are different.
finally had to give up even the occasional smoke
gave away the last bits of the equipment to kick the temptation
but god more than anything
I want an excuse to breathe deep in the sunlight
or the rain, or the darkness
and collect my thoughts before walking back in.
And I know that these eggs were going to be priced this way
regardless of any votes
been clear for decades where we were heading
where we’ve been
