Untitled #45 (2015)

You could have loved me better?
Hell I could’a loved me better.
But if I went ‘round mopin’ at all the could’a beens,
            all the should have beens,
then this leather I sewed to my skin ain’t doin’ much good.
‘n it ain’t, it ain’t like I done you justice.
I keep gettin’ hurt, love,
‘n I keep surprisin’ myself with the snap-back.
I got scars miles long ‘n bone deep,
I got weather swells ‘n ways I can’t sleep,
I got aches ‘n stiffness ‘n spasms aplenty.

Darlin’,
                        I’d be lyin’ if I didn’t say I wanted–
fingers kneadin’ circles in my shoulderblades,
as the sun sets on one more too long day,
                        but I don’t need ’em,
ain’t even sure I deserve ’em.

You could have loved me better,
but you loved at all.
It’s more than I have any right to expect.
