‘n I remember the pride with which she listed that bill of rights,
‘n she told use all how that first amendment made us that very best in the world,
that it was why all those immigrants shipped ‘cross Ellis Island,
why them terrorists seized those passenger jets back in ’01,
’cause they were scared of what that meant.
Passed at a time when the anti-federalists worried that they were repeatin’ past mistakes,
she read the text with fountain pride:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
‘n I wonder if she’s at home, eyes rapt to the television watchin’ this,
or if she turned the page ‘n moved on.
We’re taught our system of government is centered ’round “certain unalienable Rights […] Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”,
taught how our most revered national heroes fought for just those,
‘n why wouldn’t we strive to do just that,
what makes this different?
