Artist statement. (2014)

This is a sentence.

No, but really, I did something cool (to me) and I want to talk about it because I kind of threw it all up, save one post, yesterday and it might have seemed like it was just an impulsive sort of thing. It was and it wasn’t.
If you don’t want me to ramble on about it, or if you just want to judge for yourself first, you can find it here.
An explanation is after the break.

So, “Dictionaerie” besides being a pun I’m very proud of (not all word-play is humorous, btw), is a project about context. I imagine I’ve mentioned this before, but in college I used to write poetry on windows in dry erase marker. This was for two reasons. One, the fact that it was inherently non-permanent and I never transcribed those poems onto anything else was kind of the point. Words fade, and that’s actually pretty cool. Second, a window is an object meant to be looked through. Whatever you see through the window changes your perception of the window itself, and whatever is on it. The same words can mean vastly different things based upon the visual context the world gives them. I was fascinated by this, but no one else seemed as passionate about it as I was, so I shelved the idea for years.
That is, until a couple of days ago. In the wake of my unexpected move into underemployment (a term my roommate always responds to with “well, that’s certainly a way to put it”) and Robin Williams’ suicide, I wanted to revisit this whole “put things in another context” thing.
So, “Dictionaerie” is about to things. One, it’s a project about the dynamic nature of word. The same phrases are used over and over and over, to the point of ridiculousness, but the context around them is shifted from beginning to end, creating a vastly different feeling.and meaning. Two, it’s a project about valuing self-love. It’s no secret I’ve had my own share of suicidal thoughts, at least not here, and feeling like my world was crumbling didn’t help, and I’ve never felt a celebrity death the way I felt this one. So I thought it was a good time to bring in that kind of optimistic theme.
So please, go listen to this seven minute poem I made. That would be cool of you.
