Faith Ragged Hymn (2013)

saw Jesus yesterday,
took a few tokes ‘n had some jokes,
told me he was doin’ fine,
‘n I told him me ‘n mine.

in order to make up a college term paper,
I read The Children of Abraham in two four hour sittings.
    F. E. Peters droned dregs of knowledge in my ears,
    while I tossed ‘n turned,
in the chair, on the table, under the table,
movin’ wherever the mood sent me,
locked myself in the library ’til it was done.

Chateauneuf du Pape is known for it’s wine,
it’s also known for the Avignon Papacy,
and as one of two papal seats during the Schism of the Catholic Church.
But mostly, it’s known for it’s wine.
Come on in, the bottle’s on sale,
        $40, $40 a bottle!
Drink the fruit of the earth of discord!
            $40 a bottle!

Jesus ‘n I are $40 into our trip to Jack-In-The-Box,
    the Pope calls:
“you gotta, you gotta, you gotta cut that spending.
You and I, we have to help the world,
we’re here to help the world,
who, who gives a damn if we’re right?“
Jesus gets this right funny guilty face,
    puts down the Monster Taco,
but no, but no, Fox News says no,
            ain’t, ain’t, ain’t nothin’ more Christ-like,
ain’t nothin’ better than warm glowin’ windows,
            air-conditioning ‘n gluttony, knowin’, knowin’–
–there are those that don’t for no good reason ‘cept “they don’t, ‘n we don’t want ’em to.”
                    don’t ask questions.

Fell in love with the Judeo readin’ in the Rabbincal tradition,
Adam ‘n Eve’s knowledge bite as adolescence,
but Christianity’s got this forgiveness bent,
it ain’t, ain’t about keepin’ tradition,
it ain’t, ain’t about followin’ the rules as much as intent.

to be completely honest with you,
        Jesus,
the kind of people you let speak for you here in my country,
I know they ain’t even the crux of you,
but the way they twist ‘n change the tale,
I dunno if they hide greed, ignorance, hate, or pride,
I got family roots deep in your veins,
I got memories of Mass ‘n tryin’ to believe,
but I don’t want to keep their company.

Cheateauneuf du Pape was the sole Papal seat for seventy years before the Schism,
the man that teaches me about the importance of wine in culture,
he explains the name “House of the Pope” away as a result of the Schism,
reduces the French pride of Avignon to two children who couldn’t share.
it’s the wine that’s important after all,
not the history in the soil.
He wants to be a master sommelier.
F. E. Peters summates to me under the desk,
saying: I see why people want to do this, but despite the shared elements,
these three are culturally and fundamentally different from each other.
‘n fundamentals,
‘n fundamentals,
don’t need to stop some eye to eye,
understanding those differences is important to understand the culture
–and how we can coexist

Fox News totes the “War on Christmas”,
over showin’ kindness ‘n decency ‘n simple respect,
people on Facebook get annoyed at “X-mas”,
and I, I may well still go to mass this year,
        fresh off my red-eye flight,
to oiled ‘n polished pews ‘n stained glass light.

I saw Jesus the other day,
took a few tokes, ‘n had some jokes,
he told me he was fine,
but we both knew he was lyin’.
