Dakota (2013)

you belong–
–with tall streched tales told by flickerin’ light,
    an aphrodite child walkin’ graveside,
ancestrial bones clawin’ up to reach you.
    history filling your footsteps–
        –your mother half discordant,
        an unsteady diskiltered perpetual chorus–
dark dredged echos scraping long, long, after.
but sunlight ‘n overtone harmonies muffled–
–the parts you absent-mindedly sing along with.
    –a self-cast engulfing shadow
        – you feel it some nights,
the need to sing sharp of the mark,
those moments leaping but still, still still, only flat.
            the whole world–
s
        c
                a
                        t
                                t
                                        e
                                                r
                                                        s.

leaving just you and this long shadow,
a glove wearing a hand.
Wrong.

you belong–
fear gnawing at the edges is more than enough,
to drive reckless livin’ ‘n passioned vices ‘n runnin’, runnin’, runnin’ like they won’t believe.
you belong–
you smell like a pack of smokes to me,
‘n you’ve got hair you maybe haven’t washed today,
bags under eyes ‘n scattered jitter in the fingertips,
but you smile ‘n joke ‘n work ‘n work ‘n work at it.
you belong–
the dead are gone ‘n buried,
‘n the only sway they have is what’s given.
sunlight ‘n overtone harmonies are the toe tappin’ bits of her,
‘n you’ve got rhythm in that kickstep way of livin’,
discords can simply be the tension before the resolution,
they are only part of a symphony.
you belong.
